MLB has canceled the rest of spring training and is delaying the start of the regular season by at least two weeks in reaction to the spreading coronavirus.
Commissioner Rob Manfred and the 30 owners had a conference call Thursday afternoon to finalize a decision.
MLB was initially steadfast about continuing both spring training and beginning the season on time. But day by day it became more untenable as the virus spread, other sporting institutions closed shop and local governments discouraged large gatherings of people. For example, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis requested that cities and counties in the state postpone or cancel events that would attract large crowds. In addition, the NBA suspended operations on Wednesday and the NHL on Thursday.
One person briefed on the ongoing dialogue said that the NBA suspension was the game changer, forcing MLB to speed up its decision-making more than any other factor.
The regular season was been scheduled to start March 26 with all 30 teams playing.
There were initial indicators that teams might stay together in spring training sites to work out and perhaps even play games among their personnel, but without crowds. The situation, though, was fluid as MLB — like all the sports institutions — tries to figure out how to move forward when there is no idea when the threat of the coronavirus will abate.
