All that banging to just go quiet?
On Saturday, Astros third baseman Alex Bregman ducked the first public questions he’s faced about the illegal sign-stealing operation Houston used en route to a World Series win in 2017.
“The commissioner came out with a report, MLB did their report and the Astros did what they did,” he said at Astros Fan Fest at Minute Maid Park. "They made their decision on what they’re going to do.”
Bregman repeated a variation of that line several times when asked about the controversy, which cost three managers their jobs last week, led to the firing of Houston general manager Jeff Luhnow, and his own team getting fined $5 million and losing first- and second-round picks in 2020 and 2021.
But the 25-year-old’s tone shifted when asked about allegations that exploded on social media Thursday that Houston might have used buzzers, strapped to their bodies, to tell them which pitch types to expect mid-at-bat.
“It’s stupid,” he said of the speculation, which particularly engulfed Jose Altuve, who acted strangely following his ALCS-clinching home run off Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman.
Bregman hit 19 home runs for the Astros in 2017, when then-bench coach Alex Cora designed a way for players to watch a live feed from an improperly placed center field camera and then transmit pitch types to hitters in real time via players banging loudly on trash cans near their home dugout.
Houston manager AJ Hinch was suspended for the 2020 season and fired. Cora was fired from the Red Sox managerial job he got in 2018, but he hasn’t been punished yet as the league also investigates his role in another alleged illegal sign-stealing operation in Boston. And Carlos Beltran, who was a player on the 2017 Astros, either stepped down from his job as Mets manager, was fired or both, as conflicting reports have come out.
