The Yankees entered Sunday having won the first three games of the four-game set, and with a win, they would sweep series. J.A. Happ was on the mound for New York and David Price for the Red Sox. Price looked to put an end to Boston’s seven-game losing streak, while Happ tried to stretch the Yankees’ winning streak to five.
It didn’t take much time for the Yanks to get on the board. Aaron Judge dropped a nuke into the right field seats in the first inning. Surprisingly, it was his first homer since July 19. Just like that the Bombers had a 1-0 lead.
Both teams went scoreless in the second, but the Yanks exploded for six runs in the third inning, and they all came with two outs! Gio Urshela mashed a two-run bomb into the Boston bullpen, then Cameron Maybin ripped an RBI double off the wall. Mike Ford followed up with a single to bring him in. Kyle Higashioka lined one down the right field line, moving Ford to third. Mike Tauchman then drove both runners in with a single. Six straight hits lead to a 7-0 Yankee lead.
A six-run third knocked Price out of the ballgame, and he couldn’t even get himself out of the inning. His final line: 2.2 innings, nine hits, seven earned runs, including two long balls. Price has allowed six or more runs in six of his last eight starts at Yankee Stadium, equating to a 9.61 ERA over that span. That’s the highest ERA at any ballpark by any pitcher since 2016 with a minimum of six starts.
The Red Sox got two runs back in the top of the fifth. Christian Vazquez and Michael Chavis hit back-to-back jacks, cutting the Yankee lead to 7-2.
After getting two quick outs to start the sixth, Happ ran into some trouble. J.D. Martinez singled, then Sam Travis walked. A wild pitch advanced the runners to second, leading to an Andrew Benintendi single, scoring two. 7-4 Yankees.
That ended Happ’s night. He went 5.2 innings, allowing seven hits, four earned runs and two walks. He was an out away from a quality start, but instead, couldn’t escape the inning cleanly. Luis Cessa entered from the bullpen by issuing a walk to Travis, but got Chavis to strike out swinging to end the top of the sixth.
Neither team would score for the rest of the game. The Yankees won 7-4 and swept the Red Sox! Boston is now 14.5 games behind the Yanks in the AL East, virtually eliminating any scenario of winning the division.
Hats off to Cessa for hurling 2.1 scoreless innings with three strikeouts in relief, and Chad Green for shutting the door in the ninth. Job well done.
Fun fact: this was the Yankees’ first four-game sweep of the Red Sox since 2009, and the last time Boston lost nine in a row was in 2014.
The Bombers will now head to Baltimore having won five of their last six games. The first game of the series will be Monday night with Masahiro Tanaka on the hill.
