ORLANDO, Fla. -- The 2019 season has kicked off as No. 8 Florida and Miami are meeting at Camping World Stadium in Orlando. It is the first time the two intrastate rivals have met since 2013 when the Hurricanes stunned the 16th-ranked Gators 21-16 in Miami Gardens. Florida is coming off a 10-win season in coach Dan Mullen's first season in Gainesville and looking for consecutive 10-win seasons for the first time since Mullen was the team's offensive coordinator in 2008-09. For Miami, first-year coach Manny Diaz -- the team's former defensive coordinator under Mark Richt -- is looking to get the Canes back to their 2017 form.
Florida led 7-3 at the end of the first quarter and went 3-for-3 on fourth downs to open the game. However, the Gators fumbled twice in the first half, once inside the Canes' 10, and both were recovered by Miami. While the Canes started with a pair of field goals, they carved up UF for chunk yardage on a 12-play, 90-yard touchdown drive to take a 13-7 advantage with less than a minute to go until the half. That gave the Canes the chance to debut an updated turnover chain and new touchdown rings.
Florida responded after the half with 10 straight points, including a touchdown following a muffed punt by Miami. The Canes answered back immediately, taking advantage of two disastrous penalties to jump back ahead of the Gators 20-17 following a 50-yard touchdown run by DeeJay Dallas.
